The site is legal - but only within Russia. UK consumers will not face legal action for buying tracks from the site, however, it may soon face the same kind of legal action from record labels as CDWow.com did earlier this year.
The problem is that copyright is granted to specific areas. In the UK, we are part of the European Economic Area, bound by our membership to the European Union. Russia is not a member.
CDWow got in trouble for taking products aimed for sale in the Far East (where record prices are cheaper) and selling them on to Europe. Once the music industry took exception, the legal result was inevitable. CDWow was prohibited from buying cheap CDs from areas outside the European Economic Area and selling them inside it.
It may seem a fine legal point, but while Active is happy to skate on the thin ice (as is Ian), when we recommend services to readers of the magazine, we have to be entirely confident that they are completely legitimate. The position of AllofMP3 has not been tested under the new (and rather fierce) European copyright laws - so we didn’t include it before checking the facts.
