Unstoppable Copier v1.9 FREE

This program is great for recovering files from scratched CD's or defective floppy/hard disks. Normally when your computer is unable to copy a file from a damaged disk it will abort and delete the portion of the file it has copied. This program however will continue to copy the file right to the end. Any data that is not recoverable after many retries is replaced with blanks. This will allow you to truly recover every byte of information that is available for recovery. The program allows you to specify a single file, a group using wildcards (* and ?) or if you wish, select a starting folder and the program will copy all data from it and any sub folders it may contain. This program doesn't just need to be used for copying files form defective disks, it can be used to transfer any files!

Restoration v2.5.14

There are lots of programs that permanently delete files and recover them, but doesn't just having one on your hard drive make you look like you have something to hide? Restoration can rescue your accidentally deleted files and permanently delete the files you want good-and-gone. It can live on a floppy, so it leaves no trace of its activities.

Donovan Miller

Imagine a cross between Bare Naked Ladies, the Grateful Dead, and Omaha pop singer Matthew Sweet and you'll have a reasonable idea of what Donovan Miller sounds like. The site claims the three MP3 tracks offered for download are unfinished, but they sound polished to my ears. Like much of the music rooted in Midwestern folk music, Miller's songs are rich with stories of life, love and loss. Hailing from San Francisco, by way of Iowa, Donovan Miller has crafted songs across a variety of genres, in addition to composing songs for a number of media outlets. I'm not sure whether the EP tied to these tracks is still in progress or available for purchase; either way, Donovan Miller tells a new story with each track.

Xero Plugins

Four collections of Photoshop compatible plugins totaling 36 effects add a variety of artistic options to photo editing projects. Selections perform tasks like cleaning up washed out skies (Skycleaner), adding moonlight effects (Moonlight), injecting fog into a picture (Serious Fog) surreal blurring effects (Bad Dream), and liquid metal transmogrification effects (Titanium). The plugins were primarily designed using Paint Shop Pro, so fans of that program should feel confident in compatibility. Other apps like Fireworks should also prove compatible for creating photo effects. A set of still images designed to be wallpapers for 1024x768 resolutions is also available from Xero. [Windows 9x/2k/XP $0.00]
hey should work without problems with any Windows graphics program that supports the Adobe Photoshop plugin architecture. Please read the notes included in the download files for terms and conditions of use and redistribution.

Please note: These plugins are available for Windows only.

Inbox.com

As Internet communication increases, it seems like we all demand more server space for our e-mail. The classic 5MB that was offered with many of the free services back in the day just doesn’t cut it anymore. Services like Gmail have spoiled the masses by encouraging us to think in terms of gigabytes instead of megabytes. With that much space, you won’t have to worry about emptying your archives in order to make room for new mail. It should be known that Gmail isn’t the only free and generous e-mail provider on the Internet. For example, Inbox.com will give you 2GB of free storage for all of your messages.

I really like the way this service functions. First of all, the amount of space is most likely more than you'll need, and on top of that, all of this comes to you without any advertisements. The service contains many of the features that you've come to expect from an e-mail provider on the Web, and even more are on the way. With all of these great e-mail alternatives in existence today, there's virtually no reason for you to complain about inadequate storage space anymore.
and as an added bonus you also get free online storage for 2GB of files

Tile Machine.

One of the things that I love about the Internet is that there’s never a shortage of goofy stuff you can do to waste time. That may sound like a stupid statement, but that’s because it is. Using the Internet for worthwhile purposes is great, but when you feel like you can’t do anymore serious research, there are plenty of games, animations, and tools to waste your brain cells away with. You may as well create something while you’re having fun, and you can do that very thing with Tile Machine.

This site gives you a Shockwave drawing pad to mess around with. All of your regular drawing tools are available here, and a palette of colors awaits you. Create and edit as much as you like, and view your masterpiece in a variety of sizes. Once you’re done, you can save your tile for personal use (as a wallpaper, etc.), send it to friends, or submit it to the gallery.

Firefox toolbar blocks phishing sites

Netcraft has released its security toolbar for the open source Firefox browser, aiming to limit the threat from phishing scams by using a blacklist of known fraudulent websites.

The technology relies on individuals earmarking the URLs of phishing websites and passing the information on to other users. The toolbar then blocks access to the sites.

It also makes sure that the browser displays all the toolbars. Some phishing sites hide the URL to prevent users from noticing that the URL of the fraudulent site differs from the legitimate version.

The toolbar provides users with information on the site's hosting location, allowing them to confirm that the barclays.co.uk website, for example, is really hosted in the UK and not in some Soviet republic.

By displaying the country where the server is located, a user can more easily spot a fraudulent internet address.

The toolbar supports Internet Explorer running on Windows XP and Firefox version 1.0 and later for any of the supported operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

The toolbar is free of charge and can be downloaded here.

MediaMan Win XP or 2000 only

I continue to hold up the Mac OS X cataloging app Delicious Library as the quintessential tool for organizing books, DVDs, console games, VHS tapes and CDs. It's the most elegant organizer on the market. Not a reason to throw out your Windows box and buy a Mac, but definitely something I covet as a Windows user. I ran across MediaMan last week and after some close examination it comes close. In fact, I'd wager the developer of MediaMan took a fairly close look at what makes Delicious Library cool when he was putting together his own app considering some obvious similarities. The number one thing that makes MediaMan a winner is the option to use a webcam to scan UPC codes on books, DVDs and CDs. Most cataloging tools require you to either type or in the case of shiny disk media, you might be able to insert the disk in your DVD-Rom drive for identification. Data is drawn from various Amazon locations around the globe, so you get both localized data and a reasonable guarantee of accuracy. Numerous sorting options are supported for more accurate representation of your collection. A loan tracker shows you who is borrowing your stuff. Because the Amazon collection lacks some indie music and movies, eclectic tastes may still turn up no results, but this is true of all products in this category. An export feature keeps your data portable. Both elegant and effective, MediaMan is my new cataloging tool of choice. [Windows 2k/XP $0.00]

RoamDrive

RoamDrive is an application that allows you to store data in your GMail (or Hotmail/MSN) e-mail account. Unlike GMail Drive, you can not mount this as a hard drive, but there is no 40 character file name limit or 10MB file size limit.
A software utility finally exists that will leverage all of the wonderful new storage space on all three* major free internet-based email providers - Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and GMail. RoamDrive is currently in beta/. By serving as a simple front-end to the underlying storage, You can very simply have "anywhere access" to your data. It will be interesting to see how this affects membership of the mail providers, as well as if it introduces new ways to use these services. One idea would be a very simplistic "data drop" for multiple individuals to share for simple team collaboration or data-sharing.

7 Tips to Manage Your Files Better

As the amount of data on our hard drives, network drives and other storage media grows and grows, keeping those files organized and finding what you need when you need it becomes more and more difficult. Good desktop search programs can help, but the first step in keeping your information manageable is to store them in an organized manner. That takes some time and effort; just as it's easier to leave your clothes lying on the floor instead of hanging them up or putting them in the laundry basket, it's easier to just save files to whatever directory you happen to be working in - but it's just as inefficient.

Process Explorer

Introduction

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you’ll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you’ll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

Process Explorer works on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit versions of Windows for x64 processors.

QuickTime

Apple's multimedia player has long been among the most versatile such programs, for Windows users as well as Mac aficionados. Since it supports over 200 audio and video formats, you're likely to experience a minimum of hassle in playing any file you come across.

Two attractive features in this most recent version stand out: Instant-On gives you immediate playback to files, and Instant Access lets you use a time slider to jump through a movie. The program also includes skip protection to prevent interruptions in streaming media, a redesigned interface, and support for other recent codes. This version also features 3GPP: a new MPEG-4-based standard for the creation, delivery, and playback of multimedia over new, high-speed wireless networks.

Version: 6.5.2
Price: Free
QuickTime lets you experience streaming music, full-motion video, and 360-degree scenes. The plug-in, which is part of the main installation, can run inside Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator/Communicator, and America Online. You can optimize your connection speed options for DSL or cable modem, and you can use skins to change QuickTime's appearance.

This version features 3GPP: a new MPEG-4-based standard for the creation, delivery, and playback of multimedia over new, high-speed wireless networks.

The player is free, but if you want to encode files or change formats, you'll have to upgrade to the professional version, QuickTime Pro, which costs $30.

Satellite Photos From Google *

Enter any street address in its Search field. A heartbeat later (depending on the speed of your connection), you'll see a computer-generated map with a pinpoint on your desired location. But click the Satellite link in the upper right corner of the screen, and you're treated to a high-resolution satellite map of the same locale. Zoom in, zoom out, pan around--it's fun!
Of course, these satellite photos are free, so there are some trade-offs. For example, you can't zoom in to the highest levels of detail, like you can with a commercial satellite photo site like Keyhole. But the pictures you do get look great. And you can get turn-by-turn directions with the route overlaid directly on the map. That's pretty neat, too. If you love satellite photos of the earth as much as my family does, try out Google's newest site.

Lektora

Part of what made Newsgator so successful was the fact that it integrated with MS Outlook. While I personally find the app to be overly bloated, it does make it super easy to import RSS and OPML goodies into a user’s PIM with little effort. Now that PIM integration has been addressed, this brings us to the need for something of the like for all of us who want this sort of functionality from within our Web browsers.

Enter Lektora. Designed to be not only easy to use, but browser friendly as well, this could become the application that will begin to drag more of the mainstream into RSS usage kicking and screaming. The fact is that you will not likely get the mainstream to jump on board RSS without integrating it into either a user’s browser or even their email client. This is nothing new and THIS program does them both.

Lektora is completely integrated in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. It also offers an intuitive user interface and highly polished aesthetic. You can now read your news in the Internet tool you use the most: your browser.

Reading feeds is made easy with Lektora, which presents feeds in a familiar journal approach, very similar to reading a newspaper. Less clicking, more efficient reading.

I have loaded this program onto my computer and it works without any problems at all.

Searchautomator

The Internet is a treasure trove of information for just about any subject you can imagine (and some that you can't, I am sure). There are various methods for finding the information you want or need, some more effective than others. Today we take a look at a program that not conducts your searches, but also helps you to fine tune them to maximize the resources you are using, and returing the results need without the undesired extras.

The program is called Searchautomator, and is the culmination of many years of work by the author Derek Franklin. This program will change the way you search the Internet. For most people, when they go looking for stuff online, they get it all wrong! They simply turn to their favorite search engine, such as Google, or Yahoo - they enter a query, hit search, and hope for the best. If this is currently your search method, not only are you probably frustrated and wasting too much time, but you're missing out on an absolute wealth of great content (information, audio, images, video, and more). Searchautomator helps to do that by keying on two simple premises: 1) Identify key skills/processes of how an expert searcher discovers information/content online, and 2) include, and where possible, automate these processes within a single, easy-to-use interface.

A picture is a thousand words, and at this site there is a presentation of the key features of the program, as well as a free video shows it high points. There are so many benefits to the program that rather than mention and rehash them here, I would simply ask you to visit the site and see for yourself. Derek has a well designed page that makes the information readily available and easy to understand. I am sure you will find it easy to understand and even easier to use.

Never Have to Remember a Password Again with this Nifty Secure Password Generator!

Even before security became one of the top issues on the Internet, remembering passwords was a hassle, admit it. Far too many of us recycle the same password or few passwords, over and over, knowing that we shouldn’t, and hoping that nobody catches on to us, tricks us into revealing our password, or hacks a file containing our passwords. Because, let’s face it, creating a brand new password for each new website, account, or forum, and then remembering all those passwords, is nearly impossible without resorting to such crutches.

Until now.

Nic Wolff, a self-professed Perl hacker from New York City, has created a nifty, secure password generator.

The way it works is this: you think up a master password. It could be anything, but for the sake of example let’s call it “FooBar". Whenever you go to a site which requires you to create a password, you call up Nic’s password generator (either from his site, or from a local copy which you can store on your own computer), and it takes your master password, combines it with the name of the site, and then creates an MD5 hash of it (you can think of this as encoding or encrypting it). So, if you needed a new password at the example.com website, the password generator would combine “FooBar” with “www.example.com", making a password of FooBarwww.example.com, and then convert it to an MDF hash. That MD5 hash of your combined master password and the site name becomes your actual password for that site.

Whenever you need to log in to that site, you just call up the password generator, and it plugs in your encoded password. Nifty cool.

Even if you have your web browser remember and fill in passwords for you, or even if you let the website store your passwords, each password is unique, and encrypted.

Bravo, Nic, and thank you for making this available for free to the masses!

Go here to check out Nic’s Password Generator.
Infoworld's Jon Udell has posted a cool movie showing how the generator works in practice.

ClamWin AntiVirus FREE

It's in every other computer user's best interest to eliminate the possibility of virus infections because no viruses means fewer junk mail messages, less time wasted on trying to recover infected machines and more time to devote to more useful computing developments. AVG is gracious enough to offer a free version of their antivirus product, but it isn't updated as quickly as the full version and always seems to hog resources on any system I install it on. I'm finding ClamWin to be the most attractive free solution for Windows antivirus protection. It's based on the Clam AntiVirus engine, providing a simple user interface for integration into Windows and email clients like Outlook. The Clam AntiVirus engine is used in many enterprise production environments, so you're in good company. ClamWin scans files, supports scheduled scanning, receives automatic virus database updates and does all the key things you expect from antivirus protection. One downside to this particular app is that Windows XP SP2 does not recognize ClamWin and continues to report lack of antivirus on your system with ClamWin installed. If you already use an antivirus product, stick with it for as long as it keeps you safe. If you need an affordable antivirus package, or need something to recommend, ClamWin Free AntiVirus makes a good choice.
