WinAlarm is a freeware reminder and alarm program. You can use it to remind you of specific forthcoming events, or of events that recur on a regular basis. The application provides a customizable pop-up color-coded window bearing whatever text you enter, plus a customizable sound (if you want one). It can also provide advance warnings, and after-the-event reminder warnings.

I just tried an odd new community tool, MyBlogLog. The system lets you "join" a blog or site, so you also see other people who are members of the site. If you happen to see someone you know (a friend, perhaps, or maybe an industry figure or famous person), you'll likely want to see what other sites they have joined. (By default, you become a member of a site after you've visited it 10 times.) It's a neat social networking tool and unique in that it requires no action from participants to join the sites with which they develop affiliations. YES i DID join and you can find me HERE

This is a very ambitious wiki-like tool designed to make civic groups, like political campaigns and neighborhood committees, more effective.
Meetro "overlays the physical world on top of the online world." It's an instant messenger service with the flourish of being location-savvy. If you tell it where you are, and if your friends do the same, it'll tell you which of your buddies are nearby. You can also connect to people in your extended network. The system will read your MySpace profile and integrate with instant messenger networks like AIM. There are PC and Mac versions. Mobile support is forthcoming
WikiWalki lists local and international trails, and it appears that the site has a large international audience. I’m not surprised by this because people from many countries outside of the United States seem to have a healthier lifestyle, and they’re more likely to keep physical fitness at the top of their agenda. If you can’t find any trails for the activity and location that you want, then do some research and build your own. The interface is very simple to use, and all you really need to do is point-and-click to layout the path for your trail. Once built, you can then export the trail information to your GPS device so that you won’t get lost in your quest. Happy trails!

When it comes to backing up, you can never have enough utilities in your tool belt. You may just consider this program one of the most useful ones you can get.
Backing up is something we all need to do, but not many of us really do it. The reason we do not like to back up is it takes too much time. You have to bother with thinking about doing it, and then planning how you are going to do it. You have to figure out when to do it, and how often you should do it after that. It should not be this hard. Thanks to Backup To EMail, it no longer is.
This freeware program is brain dead simple.
Back up immediately any file or folder to your email account. You simply right click a file, choose “backup to email,” and it’s being sent to your email account.
There is no limit on the file size you can upload; it’s being split automatically for you. You enter the details of your email account only once. As email boxes grow in size (Gmail = 3GB, Hotmail = 2GB, Yahoo! = 2GB), people are using their mail boxes to backup their files; this software’s main aim is to help you do it very quickly in a simple right click on a file. When you enter in the settings screen the email address where you want to back up files, then the rest of the details (like outgoing SMTP server, if it requires authentication, SSL) are entered automatically for you for known mail servers.
If you use your own mail server account (for example, if you have an email in your university) then you can simply fill in the details of the mail server according to regular settings of any other email client like Outlook Express, Eudora, etc. Version 1.3.0 includes the ability to back up folders.
Google is diving further into the Web-based productivity-applications market by offering a new product that combines its online word-processing and spreadsheet programs.
The company launched on Wednesday a beta version of Google Docs & Spreadsheets. The free program lets people create, manage and share documents and spreadsheets on the Web.
The program enables people to collaborate online in real time, use a variety of file formats for importing and exporting, and publish documents and spreadsheets on a Web page or blog.
Google is not targeting the desktop productivity suite market place that Microsoft dominates with Office, despite speculation that it is, said Jonathan Rochelle, Google Docs & Spreadsheets product manager.
"It made sense to combine these products and people were asking for that," he said. "It doesn't change our strategy. This is complementary to desktop products...and lacks certain advanced features" of desktop products.

IMSafer, a new service designed to protect children using instant messaging from online predators.
Part of this solution is software that you download to your computer. It monitors IM traffic for text that's likely coming from (or going to) a predator or pedophile and sends an e-mail alert to the person who set up the service. IMSafer does not allow parents to spy on everything their child is saying in IM (who has time to read IM logs anyway?), only the context around words and phrases that it flags as potentially dangerous. Parents should also know that IMSafer is not a totally stealthed application. While the monitor runs very unobtrusively, it can been found and disabled if your child knows how to do such things.
What's clever about the service is that if the software is installed on another computer--say at a friend's house or at your kid's school--alerts generated from your child's IM account at that location will be sent to you, not to the owner of the other PC. Likewise, if a friend of your child sets off an alert at your house, their parent will get the alert. Of course, you do have to get other parents and schools to install the software for this to work, and unfortunately there's no Mac version yet. Also, the program checks IM traffic from only AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo; support for other services (including IM embedded in social networking sites) should be added soon.
Setting up IMSafer is very easy, and you don't have to know the IM screen names your child has; it tracks all conversations on the PCs you install it on, then it watches for those accounts to be used on other PCs that have IMSafer installed. The Web site could have offered parents more control over which accounts are managed, however. For example, if your child first logs on to an IM account at another location, you won't get his or her alerts, and it's unclear to me how you could claim this user ID as your child's even if you knew that it was.

You'd never believe that you could create an addictive game in just two seconds with a swipe of your mouse.
But that's what you do with Line Rider, an amusing Flash cartoon in which you become the animator. Just click "Play," then "Continue." Draw a line and click the new Play button you see at the top of the window and you're in business.
The game's creator, who goes by the handle of "fsk," suggests you start by drawing a line from upper left to upper right. But try drawing a gradual, smiley curve instead and see what happens to the little toboggan rider who careens down your slope.

The SoundBoard loads up to twelve .wav files, and allows you to play them at the click of a button. Each sound clips can be renamed have its volume set, and a position chosen. This configuration can be saved, and loaded so that your SFX are always instantly available and at the correct volume and position. Six "favourite" sound schemes can be chosen so that they can be quickly retrieved.
Multiple sounds can be played at a time, and the sound can be paused or stopped. Different colour schemes can be chosen to distinguish between multiple instances of the application. Each SFX has its duration displayed, and whilst playing either the time elapsed, or the time remaining can be shown.
What is Snippy?How often have you carefully selected some text from a Web page and copied it to an email message? Snippy makes this a snap! Simply click on the little Snippy icon in the taskbar notification area, and mark out the region of the screen that you want to copy — that's it, you're done! The cut-out image will now be in your clipboard, and you can paste it in another application.
If you are cutting out a portion of an Internet Explorer window, the URL will also be copied to the clipboard; this makes it very convenient to select something interesting on a Web site and send it out in an email message.
Copernic Desktop Search--my favorite (and free) searching tool--has been upgraded. I like it even better than before for a number of reasons. The redesigned interface is cleaner and easier to follow. For example, the different search file categories--e-mail, files, music, images, contacts, Internet Favorites, and History--are better in the new version. I can immediately see exactly how many hits were found in each category. And creating and saving custom searches is blessedly easy. The "as you type" search function is cool, too.
If you're not familiar with CDS, here's a brief rundown.
CDS looks into files--Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint docs, PDFs, and other files, such as e-mail messages (including Eudora), as well as videos and pictures. I can search on specific file types, say Word docs, or for exact words within files. The program uses an index of files on the PC in order to make searches nearly instantaneous; it updates itself while the system is idle.
The last version automatically installed itself to the taskbar at the bottom of my desktop as a new toolbar. I wasn't pleased that it did so without asking, and I promptly removed it. The new version, however, gives you an option. If you inadvertently install the features, right-click any empty portion of the taskbar, highlight Toolbars, and click Copernic Desktop Search.

This free Palm game (for OS4.x or above) puts you to work dodging asteroids and shooting down oncoming enemy craft as you scroll up the screen in each level. Several weapon types and enemy units, an autofire option, and customizable button controls keep things interesting and fun, at least for the duration of a train ride home after work.
MIXXX is a cross-platform DJ program that lets you mix MP3, OGG, WAV and AIFF music files using a crossfader, tri-band equalizer, cue points plus customisable control of knobs and sliders using keyboard shortcuts or hardware MIDI devices such as music keyboards or control surfaces.
The left side of the program has controls for tracks being played on channel 1 and the right side has controls for channel 2. Playback controls are fairly straightforward, with independent track volume sliders and buttons for stop, pause/play, fast forward, rewind, tempo adjustment (slower/faster), and gain (volume boost). Each channel also has controls to adjust the low, mid and high frequencies of the track being played, ideal for smoothly mixing any kind of track.
Each channel displays the waveform of each track as it plays, which helps you gauge if a track is going to go ambient or kick in. This area also displays a track's estimated beats per minute (bpm/tempo), title/artist, current position (in minutes) and estimated beat markers (the blue dots). By right-clicking on the waveform you can zoom in even closer, and left-clicking before dragging the mouse left or right allows you to cycle a track backwards or forwards.
The controls in the middle of the program include a master volume and left/right speaker balance, headphone controls and the trusty cross fader. At full left, the cross fader will play only channel 1. At full right, only channel 2 and anywhere between will mix the two.
WMP 11 Beta 2 (US ONLY) offers access to more online stores and lets users share content across various devices.
Microsoft has now made Beta 2 of Windows Media Player 11 available to download.
While Beta 1 allowed users to purchase music from MTV Networks' Urge service, Beta 2 introduces a host of other online music services such as eMusic, VidZone and Music Giants, bringing the total number of online stores that a user can access from within the software to 14.
Microsoft has also added Windows Media Connect functionality to the player, as a new feature called Media Sharing. Windows Media Connect allows users to stream the content of their Windows Media Player library to networked devices such as the Xbox 360.

DVD Shrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero or if you download CopytoDVD. You can also download a demo version of Nero here. The output from DVD Shrink can be saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your choice.
