FolderShare

How to Use FolderShare to Transfer Big FilesSometimes you need to send or receive files that are very large in size, even after they're zipped. Your ISP or the sender's/recipient's on the other end may not support file sizes that are over a certain limit (usually a couple of MB), and you might not want to set up an FTP server for security reasons. One solution is to use FolderShare, a file synchronization service that was recently acquired by Microsoft and is now in beta as part of the Windows Live family. You can download the software for both Windows and Mac OS X. Here's how to use it once it's installed:
If you haven't used FolderShare before, on the Welcome screen, click "I don't have a FolderShare account."
On the New Account Information page, choose a nickname and password and type in your email address. You also have to check a box certifying that you're over 13 years of age.
The software will connect to the FolderShare server and create your account.
On the "choose a computer name" page, the default is your computer's name on the network. Accept the default and click Finish.
Now you'll see a flashing icon in the system tray. You can click a FolderShare library if you've been invited to share one, or click My FolderShare to go to the web site and set up a folder to share, sync your folders, share your folders with friends on the Internet, or access your files. FolderShare operates like a private P2P program. Those you invite can share items in the folder(s) you designate to share, but can't access anything else on your computer.

pd-Base This is a FREE address book

Description: This is a FREE address book program with a much nicer user interface than normal. Also included is a Personal Info page, to keep up with any personal information you might want to save. The program requires a password of 1234 which can be changed by going to the Utilities page, plus the personal information is encrytped on your hard drive.Over the years I have seen many address books, but most were crude looking or much too complicated having to many un-needed fields. This program keeps up with needed information, such as name address telephone number, cell number, but... it has a large memo field that will hold as much as your hard will let it hold.pd-Base is FREE and does NOT have a time limit. Later versions will have more options for a small fee. Try it today, you'll like its looks and its functions.Version 1.0 includes...(1) - Password protection(2) - Ability to print pages(3) - Ability to transfer information to the system clipboard(4) - A utility page(5) - Backup and restore features(6) - Complete help page(7) - Ability to change backgroundsand much, much more... FastStone Image Viewer--Beta 5

I have looked at some of the other FastStone products before in the past, but none have impressed me more than the FastStone Image Viewer. For a freeware program, this software has just about everything you would ever need to help manage your digital photo collection on your computer. Need to know more? Here is how the folks at FastStone describe the image viewer: "FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter, and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping, and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser, and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touch the four edges of the screen. "Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram, and much more." This freeware program has just about every image managing tool you would ever need. Some of the new features in this beta 5 release are:--You can add wallpaper anywhere (under Tools menu) that allows you to put photos anywhere on your windows desktop--You can open all selected files in external program at a time--Dual Monitor support--Much more
You can pick up either the beta or the latest final release of FastStone Image Viewer via FastStone.org.

K-3D v 0.5.15.0

Creating 3D computer models is something I have always wanted to play around with, but it seems like every program out there to do it costs an arm and a leg. If you are like me and do not have the cash to burn on such things, then you should give K-3D a shot. Here is what the author of K-3D has to say about it: "K-3D is the free-as-in-freedom 3D modeling, animation, and rendering system. K-3D features a robust, object-oriented plugin architecture, designed to scale to the needs of professional artists, and is designed from-the-ground-up to generate motion-picture-quality animation using RenderMan-compliant render engines. We strongly recommend the Aqsis render engine for use with K-3D. "K-3D's innovative interactive tutorial system will introduce you to basic use of the program. New tutorials can easily be recorded and shared with the rest of the community." With so many people just kind of interested in 3D modeling, this is a program that has been needed for a long time. This could be used as a great stepping stone as well for folks who want to try out such a program but don't have the money to put down on one of the big boys in this industry.

New tool for protecting your data on a shared computer

Sure, you can use EFS encryption (if you use the Pro version of XP) to encrypt your private data, but what if someone else uses your computer when it's logged on with your user account? Then they can access all your EFS-encrypted files. Last week, Microsoft released an add-on called Private Folder 1.0 that solves this problem by letting you create a private folder that's password protected, so that even when your account is logged on the files in that folder are kept private. Warning: you have to go through the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process to download the program. Here's where you get it:

Store It on the Web

Want to send a large file to a few people? Dont use email. A better way is to post the files on the Web and send everybody a single URL so they can retrieve and open the files on their own, at their convenience. For me, the icing on the Web-sharing cake is that many of the services are completely free of charge (and we all love a bargain).
These are THREE of the best.

4shared.com

This free service provides 500MB of storage and lets you upload an unlimited number of files (though no single file can exceed 25MB in size). All of the folders you place on 4shared.com's servers are permission-based, so you can easily make some folders available to anybody while restricting access to others. You can also password-protect your folders, which adds another layer of security. Visitors access the folders through an e-mail link.

In less than 10 minutes, I created a dozen folders and subfolders, each with specific rights. You can track how many files are downloaded, but unfortunately you can't find out who did the downloading. One quibble with the free account: You have to upload and download the files one at a time.

RapidShare

This simple, no-frills,site lets you upload as many files as you want, each as large as 100MB, and send the link to any number of recipients. The files can be downloaded an unlimited number of times, and they remain on the server as long as they're downloaded at least once every 30 days. You get an annoying 23-second wait before you can download a file but thats not bad for FREE

YouSendIt

This free service lets you upload files to its Web servers for temporary storage. You can include a personal note along with the upload;YouSendIt then sends an e-mail to the person with whom you're sharing that explains how to pick up the file. You're notified when the file is sent and when it's picked up. The recipient's name is automatically added to your YouSendIt Contacts, too. While you can send your file to several people at once, the "Send To" field won't hold more than 128 characters; the service says it imposed this limit to prevent spammers from using it.

The free version limits the file size to 100MB. The files you upload are stored for seven days or for a total of 25 downloads per file. That is probably more downloads than most people will need (it's plenty for me).

Desktop Graffitist

Desktop Graffitist is a small program that enables you to spray paint your desktop, and anything else that might appear onscreen. DG is designed for recreation and creativity, and can be used to relieve office stress and boredom.
Aside from the added bonus of allowing you to vent on that stupid monthly report or the latest homework assignment, the program is also good for leaving messages on other people's computers that they can't miss (love notes, hate notes, grocery lists, and art/graffiti/vandalism, ...).
It's simple, relaxing, addictive, free, and totally fun!

SHORTCUTTER

ShortCutter is a small program (or folder) launcher. Its interface is design to be fast and effective. When running, it stays in the system tray which it waits to be activated through a user-defined hotkey.
Then it immediately launches and the small squared interface pops up centering the mouse pointer to the center of the application. From there the user has a set of choices all gathered around the mouse pointer. A center button minimizes the program back to the system tray. Around this button there are four smaller buttons. The top left and top right buttons navigate through the Shortcut Groups which are configured from the Settings Window where the user selects which Shortcut Button will launch what. The bottom left closes the program and the bottom right opens the Settings window.
All these button so far activate an action by mouse-clicking. The best part of the program is that the actual Shortcut Buttons (which are located Top-Left, Top, Top-Right, Left, Right, Bottom-Left, Bottom, Bottom-Right around the program window) triggers the action by mouse over. After that, it minimizes to the system tray again.

Windows Live Messenger

If you use MSN Messenger, you may want to check out this beta of Windows Live Messenger. This slick-looking update to MSN Messenger will eventually replace the older program. It works much like MSN Messenger, but promises some new features. The new Sharing Folders feature is a simple click-and-drag file sharing tool. Like MSN Messenger, WLM has text, video, and voice features. WLM also adds the ability to call mobile or land-line phones through a paid service with Verizon. (This feature, formerly available only in limited markets, is now available in wider distribution.)
Note: This is beta software. Microsoft says that some features may not work properly, and it will not accept responsibility for any problems encountered.

Microsoft GroupShot create a composite image

Microsoft GroupShot enables you to combine multiple photos of the same scene and create a composite image, that eliminates or exchanges parts of the original photos with parts of a nearly identical shot from the same sequence. A good example for the use of this software is to exchange facial expressions in a group shot. For example a person may have his eyes closed in an otherwise perfect photo, but has them open in another (not so perfect) shot. Microsoft GroupShot enables you to easily transfer the person`s face from shot B to shot A while maintaining all other details of the image. The program automatically stitches and aligns the detail and attempts to create a perfect composite of the two (or more images). If you have a series of shots of an identical group, taken within a short period of time, you can successfully interchange facial expressions across multiple images and have a final blend with all perfect smiles. You can also use the software to remove unwanted elements from any image (not just group shots), as long as you have an almost identical shot that does not contain the element to be removed (e.g a pedestrian walking through the scene). It takes a little while to understand the concept, but once you do, GroupShot is remarkably easy to use. The most important criteria for a successful composite is that you have at least 2 images, that are almost identical, taken from the same angle and in the same light. Provided you have a compatible series of shots, the results can be quite amazing!

CSDNPicViewer v1.26

CSDNPicViewer is a picture viewer built with .NET technology. It features fast picture browsing, and it can read and convert all the standard file formats (bmp, jpg, gif, png, tif, wmf, exif, and more).
Pictures can be displayed in a full screen mode and set to wallpaper through an easy to use interface. Despite it´s young age, CSDNPicViewer offers some nice features, such as four viewing process. This includes a "smart fit to window" mode that will only resize the picture on the fly if needed.
The program also offers an advanced feature named "SmartCompress" that allows you to JPEG compress any picture and see in real time the effects of the compression. Because of the software using .NET technology, CSDNPicViewer also offers a modern GUI.

Still not convinced? Here are some screenshots of CSDNPicViewer in action.
Sure, there are a lot of picture viewers out there. Sure, this one has a horrible name. It does the job though, with less fuss than some of the others out there. You get a handful of nice features, and it is totally free. Now how can you say no to that?

Group Shot

Microsoft Research is always releasing these clever little tools that never make it into final software products. Group Shot is a great example of this. The app is designed to take the best elements of several photos and use them to create the perfect photo. For instance, lets say you've got two virtually identical photos of your family. Composition is identical, the lighting is the same. One looks better than the other except for your spouse blinking. Everyone's eyes are open in the other shot, but it just doesn't look quite as good. Instead of accepting the sub-par picture or keeping the blink shot, you can marry them together with Group Shot to make one great photo. The app also works to eliminate stuff from the background of a picture by replacing it with the background of a similar photo. [Windows XP $0.00]

Windows Media Player 11 BETA

Microsoft releases a new version of Windows Media Player about once every two years. This beta release of WMP11 both improves on features of WMP10 and bridges the gap between what we've come to expect from the current version of WMP and what we can expect to see when Vista finally ships. The biggest changes are in navigation of media, searching and the addition of more media types to the player interface.

Web 2 Photo Editing sites

TWO interesting photo-editing tools are now online. Try Pixoh and Pxn8. These let you do with your online photos what you're probably doing right now offline, in Picasa or a similar app.

JumpCut.

Everybody's familiar with the new model for distributing video, thanks to YouTube, but most of the good videos on YouTube and other services are edited the old way: on a PC or a Mac. That may change soon, as online video editors roll out.

There's a very good one that's live now: JumpCut. With this tool, once your videos are uploaded, you can splice them together, overlay audio tracks, and add effects similar to the ones you'd find in a traditional software-based editor. Since all the editing happens online, you suffer through the slow upload only once.

You can also re-edit other people's videos, which is fun and may be a big hit with music tracks. I can see artists and labels posting their own video resources online and letting fans make their own music videos.

Google Sketchup is an easy-to-use 3D modelling software that enables you to create 3D models of houses, buildings, and many other objects using an array of drag and drop tools and materials in a WYSIWYG editing environment. You can design your objects with rectangles, circles, ovals, arcs, lines, and freehand drawings and use a unique push/pull tool to add dimension to 2D objects. The program offers a library of building material patterns (brick, concrete, wood, glass, carpet, etc.) and colors that you can use to add a realistic look to your creation. The finished design can be exported to popular image formats, including JPG, TIF, PNG, and BMP or shared via the Google 3D warehouse. Google Sketchup does not require any 3D experience, but you should read the supplied documentation and tutorials to make full use of the software - an interactive tutorial will explain the basic functionality for each selected tool. There is also a Pro version available that offers exporting to 3D and raster formats.

Zunafish

We all have things that are taking up space on our shelves, but entertainment titles are usually hard to get rid of because they're not generally worth all that much money, so selling them may be too much work for not that much money. However, trading makes sense, because someone else out there probably has something that you want and vice versa. Once an offer is agreed upon, Zunafish makes it very easy for you to make the trade happen by providing a postage label and telling you how much postage you'll need to use. Each trade will cost you US$1, but besides that, there are no other fees.

Wikispaces

Create simple web pages that groups, friends, and families can edit together

Whether youve created a product or service and want to create a community resource, or you just want to build a wiki for yourself and your family, there are plenty of options, and another one to consider is Wikispaces. After joining to create your wiki, you're sure to be pleased by the availability of their visual editor, which will make it easy for you to create what you want to create. One of the scary things about opening up a resource to the public is the possibility of vandalism and spamming, but Wikispaces helps fight this problem by backing up every version of a page, so that in a pinch, you can revert back to a previously accepted content structure. RSS feeds are also available to keep you informed of page changes and discussions.

GetByMail

If you do work in two locations--but don't want to messy with pricey, complicated remote-access software--consider GetByMail. This freebie lets you access another computer through your e-mail account. Your files bypass limited FTP access, firewall problems, and other roadblocks by going through the approved channel of e-mail.
"Well, duh, I can e-mail files," you might say. But there's more to GetByMail than that. The program lets you see remote directory listings and make changes, uploading and downloading files. GetByMail automatically compresses and splits files for downloads and uploads.
GetByMail supports SSL connections over POP3 and SMTP (the prevalent e-mail protocols). It's also compatible with Gmail.

SIW v1.58--System Information For Windows

Do you know everything about your computer by heart? Hey, don't feel bad, neither do I. That is why I use SIW - System Information for Windows. It lets you know just about everything about your computer. The best part about this program is it is totally free to use. So what is SIW all about? "This program perform computer configuration analysis and diagnostics. It gives detailed information about your computer properties and settings, detailed specs for CPU, motherboard, chipset, BIOS, CPU, PCI/AGP, USB and ISA/PnP devices, memory, monitor, video card, disk drives, CD/DVD devices, SCSI devices, S.M.A.R.T., ports, network cards, printers, operating system, installed programs and hot fixes, processes, services, serial numbers (CD keys), users, open files, system uptime, network, network shares, as well as real-time monitors for CPU, memory, page file usage and network traffic. It displays currently active network connections, passwords hidden behind asterisks, installed codecs, and more." Having a tool like this one is always useful for looking to see what is going on under the hood of Windows and your computer. One of my favorite features of this program is the interface is really easy to understand. Usually with these programs, you don't know where to click or what you are reading. For being such a small download, this program gives you a lot.

LimeWire 4.10.9 Clear, reliable and free file sharing so

LimeWire has arguably taken the position previously held by Napster, and more recently Kazaa, as the world's most popular P2P file-sharing client.

With a guarantee of no spyware, adware or bundled software, it also aims to be the most carefree.

You can look for pretty much anything - movies, pictures, games or text documents - and the clear and uncluttered interface makes for a surprisingly straightforward search.

The ability to preview files while they download is very useful and there is a marked increase in download speed compared to previous updates.

When ill-mannered programs don't release your computer's RAM after you run them, FreeRAM can do the job. FreeRAM XP Pro is a freeware application that frees and defragments your computer's random access memory. FreeRAM XP Pro frees up this memory, thereby increasing system response time, stability, speed, and efficiency.

This version introduces RAM-Cuts (shortcuts designed to free RAM).

Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre

Government fights online child abuse
The government has today launched a new law enforcement agency to tackle online child exploitation.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre headed by the former deputy director general of the National Crime Squad, Jim Gamble, will work with charities and IT firms to take down criminally obscene material from the internet.

Internet and online payment firms such as Microsoft, AOL and Visa will also co-operate with CEOP to track down internet sex offenders.

The centre will develop IT systems to track sex offenders and disseminate intelligence globally.

CEOP chief executive Jim Gamble says the launch of the new centre is the most significant development in child protection in years and is a response to an explosion in child abuse.

'What we have to understand is that behind every image online there is a child in the real world being abused. Behind every online chat there is the potential that your child may be speaking to a sex offender. That is a harsh reality,' said Gamble.

The agency will also launch an online awareness campaign to educate parents and children about the risks associated with chat rooms.

CEOP will also have direct input into the development of new security features online, which aim to make browsers and websites safer for children.

While activity by the Internet Watch Foundation has dramatically reduced the number of child abuse images hosted in the UK, paedophiles are also distributing images via chat rooms and emails.

A recent police operation seized over 750,000 obscene images, while over eight million children and young people in the UK use the internet.

'That is not to say of course that the internet isn't a great place. It is a great environment – one that is full of learning and fun opportunities. What we are saying to children, young people and parents is that by putting awareness first you will reduce the opportunities for harm,' said Gamble.

The agency will also increase its fight against the paedophiles spreading the images over the internet, he said.

'If you are a sex offender – get help or get caught. The internet will increasingly expose you to new policing powers and will cease to be the anonymous place that it once was,' said Gamble.

PLEASE NOTE

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre has set up its own young persons website which has been designed and written specifically for young people of secondary school age.

It will at a later date include content and interactive games for primary aged children.

The website is called 'thinkuknow' which you may have heard of already or seen a presentation at school. You can access the site at www.thinkuknow.co.uk

Visual Task Tips

Visual Task Tips is an image preview shell enhancement utility for the Windows Taskbar. It shows a thumbnail preview image for each window in the taskbar when you mouse over the taskbar icon, similar to the upcoming feature in Windows Vista. Instead of seeing meaningless Internet Explorer or Word titles in your taskbar you can quickly scan for the correct page.

Google Calendar

Google launched their much-anticipated Google Calendar today, dubbed CL2 (in beta, of course) Does Google Calendar deliver? Well, there’s certainly plenty to like about it. It has a slick interface and it’s fast (at switching between pages, anyway). So give it a try but just remember its still in Beta (but then again so is Google mail but that has still taken over the world)

Jarte

Whether you're writing a business letter or the great American novel, you don't need to fork over the cost of a few hardcover books just to use your PC as a typewriter. You don't need tons of extra bells and whistles getting in between you and your deathless prose, either. Jarte is a compact word processor--small enough to put on a USB key--that's completely free of charge.

Jarte's small size doesn't keep it from offering some well-selected features. For instance, WordWeb integration offers dictionary and thesaurus word lookup on the fly. Firefox fans will like the tabbed document windows. Jarte is designed to make it easier to find the documents, folders and fonts that you designate as favorites.

If you like Jarte but would appreciate extra features such as document notes, personal shortcuts, and a choice of background patterns, consider buying Jarte Plus from the vendor's site.

404 error messages

Here's one of the funniest 404 error messages I've seen in a while. CLICK HERE

Find A Grave.

This site is a genealogists dream, but its main claim to fame is that here you can find where just about anyone who was anyone is buried. Or more correctly, where their final resting place is.You can search by name, location, claim to fame, or by a specific date. There is also a search engine for locating graves of others, such as relatives. There are over 9.5 million records accessible on the site, as well as discussion forums on a variety of subjects.

Dancing Paul. Just plain fun.

Todays site is one that is just plain fun. I have to admit that it took a few minutes to figure out what exactly was going on. But once I figured it out, it was totally fun. You will have to admit, after a few minutes here, that the designer is one totally warped dude. and i thank >Lockergnome for the link

Slide

This service essentially provides rolling filmstrips that contain the latest pictures from a variety of services. Whether it's a collection of personal photos or content from an RSS feed, people can subscribe to this stream of information in order to be instantly updated on what's new.

SiteAdvisor

We test the Web to help keep you safe from spyware, spam, viruses and online scams.
  • Why trust us?

  • Why isn't the security software you already have enough?

  • Do sites pay us to be rated?

  • SiteAdvisor is free, for the moment, and the basic service will remain so. It plans to add some premium services, including "protected search" and "protected browse" to disable clicks on sites rated red, disposable e-mail addresses to help reduce spam, and e-mail/instant messenger "link checking" to help prevent identity theft and other phishing scams.
This service isn't a cure-all, by any means. There is no way to protect people who insist on relying exclusively on the efforts of others and doing no thinking for themselves. But for those of us who are careful already, this is another tool on the bar to make our Web lives a bit easier.
Give it a shot, and let me know what you think.
Disclaimer: I have no association with SiteAdvisor, apart from having done some beta testing.

Wetpaint - Best Wiki So Far?

    <font color="#0000FF">Wetpaint - Best Wiki So Far?

Wetpaint opened its doors today to show off a few sample sites that use its new, super-slick wiki platform.

You can get a good overview of how users interact with wiki’s built on the platform by going through the rather tedious tour. Basically, its a highly user-friendly wysiwyg-type wiki platform. To see an example wiki, check out the xbox 360 site they’ve created.

This is a hosted wiki solution, and Wetpaint’s business model is to add contextual advertising to each page of the wiki.

    HD Tune

HD Tune is a wonderful piece of software for anyone wanting to monitor their hard drives health, check it for errors, monitor heat, or benchmark its performance.
Its simple and easy to use. Performance is quick and accurate and very well supported with new versions being released every few months with fixes.
You can also compare your hard drive's performance versus other drives by different companies, sizes, and performance. The benchmarking utility is the best feature and what most will use this program for (including myself). It will check your transfer rate on all three accounts including minimum, maximum, and overall average transfer. You will also get your access time, burst rate, and CPU usage from benchmarking.
If you're looking for a way to keep an eye on your hard drive in terms of its health and performance, this is a great way to do so - and without cost.
